From: Loren Doornek Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2002 10:05 AM To: 'providex@pvx.com' Subject: Backup Exec and *NTHOST FYI: We had problems with Backup Exec 'stealing' port 10000 from on our Providex server running *nthost. We didn't want to changed the default port used by *nthost since that would only be a band-aid for the problem, rather then fixing the actual problem. We spent several weeks trying to convince Backup Exec that it was their software doing this (Start their service and port 10000 is in use. Stop their service and port 10000 is available. Start their service again and port 10000 is in use again. Seems pretty obvious to me...) They finally figured out where and why this is happening, and gave us the solution below. Thought I'd share it with this list in case anyone else is running Backup Exec and *nthost. -----Original Message----- From: Michael Connors [mailto:xxxxMichael.Connors@veritas.comxxxx] Sent: Monday, February 18, 2002 9:44 AM Subject: RE: What are the Basic Troubleshooting steps on NDMP for NetBackup 3.2 We had been getting some calls over the past week where Clients, such as you, have seen Backup Exec is attempting to attach to TCP port 10,000. After doing some research last week with our Engineering staff, we have found this to be true. Backup Exec 8.6 revision 3878 has added support for a protocol called NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) and this service listens on port 10,000. We have determined that renaming the file NDMPSRVR.DLL will prevent the Backup Exec Remote Agent from attempting to start this service. It will not affect any other aspects of operation within the Backup Exec Remote Agent. The best method to resolve this issue can be done by: 1) Stopping the Backup Exec Remote Agent service on the Target Server. 2) Opening the Explorer and browsing to the RANT directory (C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\RANT) 3) Renaming NDMPSRVR.DLL to NDMPSRVR.OLD 4) Starting the Backup Exec Remote Agent service For more information on what NDMP is and what is does, visit: http://www.ndmp.org Yours respectfully, Michael Connors - MCSE, CNE Technical Support Engineer Backup Exec for NT/2000 VERITAS Technical Support Email: michael.connors@veritas.com http://support.veritas.com
